Indian Forces Avert Maritime Disaster in MV Wan Hai 503 Fire, Mark Major Salvage Milestone

New Delhi: In a major development in the firefighting and salvage efforts aboard the MV Wan Hai 503, Indian maritime forces have successfully begun towing the burning vessel away from the Kerala coastline—averting what could have been a severe environmental disaster.

The Singapore-flagged container ship, which caught fire earlier this week near the Kerala coast, posed a significant threat due to its proximity to land and hazardous cargo onboard. The joint operation, involving the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force, faced immense challenges including rough weather and a stubborn onboard blaze.

"A major breakthrough in the salvage operation occurred on June 13 when the tow was successfully transferred from the Coast Guard to the tug Offshore Warrior," the Indian Coast Guard stated in a post on X. "Despite harsh weather, the Indian Navy’s Sea King helicopter winched salvage personnel onto the vessel 20 nautical miles off Kochi. The ship is now 35 nautical miles offshore, with only thick smoke and residual hotspots remaining."

The ICG added: "The Coast Guard, Navy, and Air Force continue to work in perfect coordination to prevent a marine ecological crisis. The ship will remain more than 50 nautical miles from the coast until further decisions are made. This is a stellar example of maritime coordination and rapid response."

The successful handover of the tow line marked a critical moment in the mission, enabling controlled towing of the vessel away from populated coastal zones.

Following the tow connection, the Indian Navy safely airlifted the salvage team from the deck using a helicopter. Towing operations are now underway, with naval and support vessels including INS Sharda and OSV MV Triton Liberty playing key roles in containment and coordination.

The seamless cooperation among Indian maritime forces has been pivotal in minimizing the threat of a large-scale environmental disaster, setting a benchmark for rapid response in maritime emergencies.
