India Begin Asian Volleyball Championship Campaign With Narrow Loss to China

India began their campaign at the Asian Men's Volleyball Championship with a straight-sets defeat against three-time champions China, losing 21-25, 26-28, 25-27 in a closely contested Pool B encounter on Saturday.

Despite the 0-3 result, India showed considerable fight, particularly in the second and third sets, pushing China to the limit in both. The opening set remained close throughout, but China managed to maintain its composure in the closing stages to take it 25-21.

India raised their intensity in the second set and forced the contest beyond the usual 25-point mark. However, China held their nerve when it mattered most, eventually taking the set 28-26.

The third set produced another tense finish. India stayed within touching distance of their opponents and had opportunities to extend the contest, but China again produced the crucial points late in the set to win 27-25 and complete the victory.

China head coach Vital Heynen said the team had achieved its pre-match objective but acknowledged that his players needed to improve their consistency, particularly towards the end of the second and third sets, Xinhua reported.

China also held the statistical advantage in attack and blocking. They scored 45 points through attacks compared with India's 39 and produced nine blocks, while India managed six.

The win gave China three points and placed them second in Pool B on points ratio, behind Iran. Iran had opened their campaign with a 3-0 victory over New Zealand on Friday.

India will next face Iran on Monday in what promises to be another demanding Pool B encounter. China, meanwhile, will take on New Zealand in their second group match on the same day.

Elsewhere in the tournament, South Korea defeated Chinese Taipei 3-1, while hosts Japan overcame Oman 3-1. Thailand swept Qatar 3-0, and Australia began their Pool A campaign with a 3-0 win over Bahrain.

The 12 participating teams have been divided into three pools. The top two teams from each pool, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarterfinals.

The championship is being held in Japan and will continue until September 13. The tournament carries added significance as the champions will earn Asia's first men's volleyball qualification place for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The three medal-winning teams will also qualify for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Cup.

For India, the next match against Iran will be crucial in their bid to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive after a promising but ultimately unsuccessful opening contest against one of Asia's leading volleyball sides.
