Hatia-based social worker Abhijit Haldar joined the Indian National Congress on Wednesday, marking his formal entry into the party. Hatia resident Subroto Bhattacharya also joined the Congress during the same programme.
The membership drive was organised under the leadership of Mahanagar Congress general secretary and spokesperson Indrajit Singh. Former Union Minister Subodh Kant Sahay, Mahanagar in-charge Dharmraj Kuju, Mahanagar president Dr Kumar Raja, state general secretary Ajay Nath Shahdeo and several other party leaders and workers were present.
Following their induction, the Congress appointed Abhijit Haldar as district secretary, while Subroto Bhattacharya was given the responsibility of Hatia block general secretary.
Party workers welcomed the newly appointed office-bearers by garlanding them and offering sweets. Congress leaders said the induction of people who have been actively involved in social work and public service would strengthen the party's organisational base.
They said Haldar and Bhattacharya's experience and association with local communities could help the Congress expand its grassroots presence in Hatia and surrounding areas.
The leaders congratulated both newly appointed functionaries and expressed confidence that they would work actively to strengthen the organisation and connect the party more closely with local residents.
