Jamshedpur: Automobile giant Tata Motors has announced a seven-day suspension of operations at its Jamshedpur manufacturing facility beginning today, May 29, citing prevailing business requirements and ongoing market realignment measures.
The temporary shutdown will remain in effect till June 4 and combines compensatory offs, a scheduled block closure, and the weekly holiday, leading to a complete halt in operations across departments, divisions and general offices during the period.
The company communicated the decision through two separate internal circulars issued to employees.
According to the first notification, compensatory leave has been sanctioned for employees who had earlier worked on designated weekly off days.
Under the arrangement, May 29 has been declared compensatory off against duty performed on March 15, May 30 against work carried out on March 29, and June 1 against duties rendered on April 19. May 31 falls under the regular weekly holiday schedule.
However, the Foundry Division will continue functioning on May 29 and May 30, as the compensatory leave provision will not apply to that unit.
Employees assigned duties during the shutdown period have been instructed to avail their compensatory leave within the stipulated timeframe.
In a separate circular, the company also announced a block closure from June 2 to June 4 in accordance with provisions of the wage agreement signed between the management and the union on March 19.
As per the notification, employees affected by the block closure will have to adjust 50 per cent of the closure period against their Privilege Leave (PL) or Casual Leave (CL), while Tata Motors will bear the wage liability for the remaining duration.
Industry observers view the temporary suspension as part of Tata Motors’ broader production and inventory management strategy aimed at aligning output with current market conditions and demand patterns.
