Ranchi: During the Assembly elections, a popular slogan echoed across Jharkhand: “Hemant Hai Toh Himmat Hai” (If Hemant is there, there is courage). The ongoing Rajya Sabha election controversy appears to have reinforced that sentiment, with Chief Minister Hemant Soren once again demonstrating his political clout in the state.
After the Congress announced its Rajya Sabha candidate without reportedly taking Hemant Soren into confidence, the Chief Minister’s strong reaction sent shockwaves not only through the state Congress unit but also through the party's central leadership in New Delhi. Political circles have been abuzz with claims that Congress leaders have been working overtime to resolve the situation and secure JMM's support.
The Congress candidate, Pranab Jha, is a political advisor to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Political observers believe that Congress cannot secure victory in the Rajya Sabha election without the backing of the ruling JMM. A lack of support from JMM could significantly hurt Congress’s chances and potentially lead to embarrassment for the party at the national level if its candidate loses.
‘INDIA Alliance Will Win Both Seats’: Bandhu Tirkey
Congress Working President Bandhu Tirkey sought to downplay the differences, saying that disagreements are common within alliances and can be resolved through dialogue.
He said the concerns raised by JMM were discussed within the Congress leadership and that the bitterness that had emerged between the two alliance partners had now been resolved.
According to Tirkey, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader Rahul Gandhi, and Congress General Secretary K. C. Venugopal have all spoken with Chief Minister Hemant Soren, leading to a resolution of the issue.
“Everything has been sorted out now. You can write it down — the INDIA alliance will win both Rajya Sabha seats,” Tirkey asserted.
The developments suggest that after days of uncertainty and political signaling, the Congress-JMM alliance has managed to bridge its differences ahead of the crucial Rajya Sabha contest.
