From ‘Pharmacy of the World’ to Innovation Hub: PM Modi Highlights Pharma Shift

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday underscored India’s evolving pharmaceutical landscape, stating that the country is steadily transitioning from being the “pharmacy of the world” to a global hub of innovation.

Sharing insights from an article by Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, the Prime Minister highlighted how India’s pharma sector is moving up the value chain, with a strong emphasis on research and development, biologics, biosimilars, and advanced therapies.

Modi noted that while India has long been known for supplying affordable generic medicines worldwide, the current focus is on innovation-led growth. He pointed out that sustained policy support and government initiatives have helped reshape the sector, encouraging investment in cutting-edge drug development and scientific research.

Calling Nadda’s article a “must-read retrospection,” the Prime Minister said it captures India’s preparedness to compete in the global pharmaceutical race. The article explains how the country is building a robust ecosystem to support next-generation treatments and complex drug manufacturing.

It further highlights that India is no longer confined to large-scale generic production but is increasingly investing in high-value segments such as biologics and biosimilars—areas expected to drive the future of the global pharma industry.

With a strategic push toward innovation and advanced research, India aims to strengthen its position not just as a volume leader, but as a key player in developing breakthrough medical solutions worldwide.
