Mathura Boat Tragedy: Death Toll Climbs to 10, Search for Missing Continues

Mathura — The death toll in the tragic boat capsizing incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district has risen to 10, with several people still missing as rescue operations continue on an urgent footing.

The figure was confirmed by Shailesh Kumar Pandey, DIG of Agra Range, who said that search teams are actively working to trace those unaccounted for.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that he was “deeply pained” by the loss of lives. He extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured, adding that local authorities are providing all necessary assistance.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the incident as “extremely tragic and heart-rending.” He said officials have been directed to rush to the site, intensify rescue efforts, and ensure proper medical care for the injured. He also prayed for peace for the departed souls and strength for the grieving families.

The accident took place in the Yamuna River near the well-known Kesi Ghat when a boat carrying devotees capsized on Friday afternoon.

According to District Magistrate CP Singh, the incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. Nearly 30 people from Ludhiana were on two boats when one of them reportedly sank after hitting a floating pipa bridge.

Officials said several passengers have been rescued, while police teams, local administration, and divers are continuing the search operation at the site.

More than a dozen people are still feared missing, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation while prioritising rescue and medical support for survivors.
