Skyroot’s Vikram-1 set for historic liftoff, marking India’s private space breakthrough

New Delhi: India is poised to achieve a major milestone in its space journey on Saturday as Hyderabad-based startup Skyroot Aerospace prepares to launch Vikram-1, the country's first privately developed orbital launch vehicle, ushering in a new era for India's commercial space sector.

The mission, titled Mission Aagaman, is scheduled to lift off at 11:30 a.m. from the First Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

Vikram-1's maiden test flight is expected to place India among the growing list of nations with privately built orbital launch capabilities. Designed and developed entirely by Skyroot Aerospace, the rocket represents a significant step forward for India's private space industry and its ambitions in the global commercial launch market.

Ahead of the launch, Skyroot confirmed that all required airspace and maritime clearances have been obtained. Authorities have designated restricted zones along the rocket's flight path and impact corridor to ensure a safe and smooth mission.

Mission Aagaman follows the company's successful Vikram-S suborbital mission, which was launched on November 18, 2022, becoming a landmark achievement for India's private space ecosystem.

Adding a unique and symbolic element to the mission, a handwritten postcard by Prime Minister Narendra Modi carrying the words "Vande Mataram" will travel into space aboard Vikram-1. The company said the postcard will be among several commemorative payloads included on the test flight.

The rocket will also carry handwritten messages from Skyroot employees, investors, policymakers and supporters from around the world. Describing the initiative as a tribute to the collective effort behind India's growing private space sector, Skyroot said the keepsakes reflect the aspirations and shared vision of everyone who has contributed to the country's new space journey.

A successful launch of Vikram-1 is expected to significantly boost India's standing in the global space industry, demonstrating the capabilities of its private aerospace companies while creating fresh opportunities in the rapidly expanding commercial satellite launch market.
