Monsoon Intensifies Over Jharkhand, IMD Sounds Four-Day Alert for Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms

Jamshedpur: The southwest monsoon regained momentum across Jharkhand on Friday with widespread showers drenching several districts, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a four-day weather alert warning of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and spells of heavy rain till July 20.

Intermittent rain lashed Jamshedpur and adjoining areas since the early morning, providing respite from the sultry weather but disrupting traffic and normal routine. Several low-lying stretches reported waterlogging, vehicles moved at a crawl on major roads, and reduced visibility affected commuters during intense spells of rainfall.

The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 Kmph at isolated places across Jharkhand every day until July 20.

Heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated locations, particularly over parts of southern Jharkhand on Friday, while Latehar and Chatra are likely to witness heavy showers on Saturday. Although no district-specific heavy rainfall warning has been issued for July 19 and 20, active monsoon conditions are expected to persist across the state with frequent thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rain in several areas.

Meteorologists attributed the revival of monsoon activity to a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Odisha-West Bengal coast.

The weather system, accompanied by an upper-air cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 Km above mean sea level, is likely to move northwestwards over north Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal during the next two days, further enhancing rainfall over Jharkhand.

The low-pressure system is being reinforced by a favourable monsoon trough stretching across northern India, another cyclonic circulation over east Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Bihar, and a trough extending from the Bay of Bengal to the east-central Arabian Sea.

Together, these systems are drawing abundant moisture into the region, creating ideal conditions for widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning.
Weather experts said the current spell is expected to improve rainfall activity across the state, which has been facing a significant seasonal deficit since the onset of the southwest monsoon.

Continued rainfall over the next few days is likely to benefit paddy transplantation and other agricultural operations, though isolated incidents of urban flooding cannot be ruled out in vulnerable areas.

The IMD has advised people to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under isolated trees or near electric poles, and stay away from water bodies during lightning activity.

Motorists have also been urged to drive cautiously due to slippery roads and poor visibility during heavy showers.

"The showers have certainly made the weather pleasant after days of humidity, but they have also exposed the city's poor drainage network. Even a few hours of rain were enough to trigger waterlogging and long traffic jams at several busy intersections," said Rakesh Verma, a resident of Sakchi in Jamshedpur.
