Kolkata: In a major boost to India's indigenous defence capabilities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has granted Final Operational Clearance (FOC) to the homegrown 'Netra' Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system, marking a significant milestone in the country's pursuit of self-reliance in advanced aerospace and defence technologies.
The Netra AEW&C system was developed through close collaboration between the Indian Air Force, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Ministry of Defence, and industry partners. Designed to strengthen airborne surveillance, situational awareness, and battle management capabilities, the system has now been fully cleared for operational deployment after receiving its Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) in 2017.

The FOC certification ceremony was held in Bengaluru and was presided over by Deputy Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti. The event was attended by several serving and retired senior defence officials, including former Air Chief Marshal R.K.S. Bhadauria, former DRDO Chairman S. Christopher, senior DRDO scientists, and representatives from partner industries.
Speaking at the ceremony, Air Marshal Bharti highlighted the Netra system's reliable performance during Operation Sindoor and the Balakot air strikes. He stressed that indigenous defence technologies provide the armed forces with greater flexibility to upgrade and adapt systems in response to evolving battlefield requirements. He also praised the strong collaboration between the IAF, DRDO, and industry, describing it as the key to the programme's success.

DRDO's Director General of the Aeronautics Cluster, Distinguished Scientist K. Rajalakshmi Menon, outlined the development journey of Netra, detailing the technical challenges overcome during the project. She underscored the importance of system engineering in successfully planning and executing flight tests that led to the system's operational readiness.
Distinguished Scientist and Director General of DRDO's Electronics Cluster, B.K. Das, described the Netra programme as a shining example of India's growing self-reliance in defence technology and a step towards the vision of 'Viksit Bharat'.
During the event, special recognition was given to the organisations and teams that played a crucial role in developing and operationalising the Netra AEW&C system. Officials acknowledged that the collective efforts of all stakeholders transformed the project from an ambitious concept into a battle-ready indigenous surveillance platform.
