New Delhi: The United States has cleared a military sustainment package worth an estimated **$482.2 million** to support India's fleet of **AH-64E Apache attack helicopters** and **M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers**, a move aimed at boosting the operational readiness of the Indian armed forces.
The approval comes after the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which oversees the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme, formally notified Congress following clearance from the US State Department.
Of the total package, around **$230 million** has been earmarked for long-term maintenance and support of India's M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers. The package includes spare parts, repair and return services, technical assistance, personnel training, field service representatives, depot-level maintenance capabilities and other logistics support.

In a separate notification, the US Department of Defense approved an estimated **$198.2 million** sustainment package for India's AH-64E Apache attack helicopters. The support will include engineering assistance, technical and logistics services, training, technical publications and programme management support.
The Apache support programme will be led by **Boeing** and **Lockheed Martin**, while **BAE Systems** of the United Kingdom will serve as the principal contractor for the M777 howitzer support package.
India had inducted the M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers through the US Foreign Military Sales programme to strengthen its artillery capabilities, particularly in high-altitude and mountainous regions.
According to the US Department of Defense, the proposed sales are intended to advance American foreign policy and national security objectives by reinforcing the strategic defence partnership with India.
"The proposed sale will improve India's capability to meet current and future threats, strengthen its homeland defence and deter regional threats," the department said.
