New Delhi — Telegram has been restored on the Google Play Store in India after a week-long suspension imposed by the Centre as a precautionary measure during the NEET UG 2026 re-examination. However, the messaging app remains unavailable on Apple's App Store.
The government had directed the temporary removal of Telegram from June 16 to June 22 following a request from the National Testing Agency (NTA). The agency alleged that organised cheating syndicates were using the platform to spread misleading information and defraud candidates appearing for the NEET UG 2026 re-examination held on June 21.
While the app is once again accessible on the Play Store, the Centre's order disabling Telegram's message-editing feature will continue until June 30.

According to the NTA, both the temporary block and the restriction on message editing were introduced to maintain public order and curb the activities of organised cheating networks targeting medical aspirants.
The NEET UG re-examination was conducted successfully on June 21, with no reports of paper leaks or other major irregularities emerging so far.
Earlier this month, the Delhi High Court upheld the Centre's decision to temporarily restrict Telegram's services and suspend its message-editing feature.
Rejecting a petition filed by Telegram FZ LLC, the court ruled that the government had followed the procedure laid down under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act while invoking emergency blocking powers. It also held that the restrictions met the constitutional test of proportionality.

The High Court observed that, considering the emergency nature of the government's order, the reasons provided were sufficient and the procedural requirements under Section 69A had been duly followed. As a result, Telegram's challenge to the order on the grounds of inadequate communication of reasons was dismissed.
The restrictions were imposed based on recommendations from the National Testing Agency and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
