New Delhi: India's steel industry maintained steady momentum in May 2026, with both production and consumption of finished steel recording healthy year-on-year growth, driven by strong demand from the country's expanding infrastructure sector.
According to data released by the Ministry of Steel, finished steel production rose to 13.8 million tonnes in May, marking a 6.8 per cent increase from 12.9 million tonnes during the same month last year.
Domestic demand remained robust, with finished steel consumption climbing 9.3 per cent to 14.4 million tonnes, compared to 13.1 million tonnes in May 2025. The growth was largely fuelled by major infrastructure projects undertaken by the Central government, particularly in the highways, railways and ports sectors.

Crude steel production also witnessed a modest rise, reaching 14.1 million tonnes in May, up from 13.8 million tonnes a year earlier.
India's total crude steelmaking capacity has now reached nearly 221.9 million tonnes per annum as of May 2026, keeping the country on course to achieve the National Steel Policy target of 300 million tonnes per annum by 2030.
State-owned Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) also reported a strong financial performance for FY2025-26. The company achieved its highest-ever sales volume of 19.93 million tonnes and posted revenue of Rs 1,10,810 crore. Sales volume increased by 11.4 per cent year-on-year, reflecting healthy market demand and improved operational efficiency.

To strengthen long-term raw material security, SAIL and NMDC are exploring opportunities to acquire coking coal assets and secure nickel supplies in Russia following a delegation visit in May 2026. SAIL has constituted an internal committee to evaluate potential investments, while NMDC is assessing overseas coal assets as part of its resource strategy.
On the sustainability front, SAIL's Bhilai Steel Plant received Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification for its TMT bars, reinforcing its commitment to environmentally responsible steel production. The plant's 15 MW floating solar power project generates nearly 34.25 million units of clean electricity annually, helping reduce carbon emissions and supporting the growing demand for green steel in both domestic and international markets.
