India’s Developer Boom: 27 Million and Counting on GitHub

New Delhi: India’s technology ecosystem is expanding at an exceptional pace, with GitHub reporting that the country now has 27 million developers ?????ly building on its platform.

In 2026 alone, over two million new developers from India have joined GitHub—accounting for roughly one in every seven new developers globally, the highest contribution from any country. This rapid growth has firmly positioned India as the fastest-growing developer community in the world.

India is also emerging as a powerhouse in open-source development. The country boasts the largest base of open-source contributors globally and ranks second overall in contributions, just behind the United States. Notably, Indian developers have made over 7.5 million contributions to open-source AI projects, making India the second-largest contributor in the AI open-source space.

Several homegrown open-source projects are now gaining global traction. Platforms like Hyperswitch (payments), ERPNext (enterprise solutions), ToolJet (low-code development), and Bruno (API testing) highlight India’s growing capability to build scalable, globally relevant technologies.

Globally, GitHub’s ecosystem continues to expand, with over 180 million developers using the platform, including more than 90% of Fortune 100 companies. Additionally, more than 77,000 organisations have adopted AI-powered tools like GitHub Copilot to enhance productivity and streamline development workflows.

Speaking about India’s trajectory, Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft, had earlier projected that India is on track to become the largest developer community in the world by 2030, with an estimated 57.5 million developers.

He emphasized that this growth represents more than just numbers—it’s an opportunity for India to lead in building AI-driven, large-scale societal solutions. According to Nadella, developers in India are increasingly leveraging platforms like GitHub, Azure, and advanced AI tools to work on innovations that were once limited to elite research labs.

Looking ahead, the future of software development is shifting toward a more flexible ecosystem. Instead of relying on a single AI model, developers are now empowered to choose, evaluate, and deploy multiple models, enabling more efficient and confident innovation.

India’s developer surge is not just a trend—it’s a structural shift that could define the next decade of global technology leadership.
