WhatsApp has started rolling out a new bill payment service in India, allowing users to discover, manage and pay household and utility bills directly through the messaging platform.

The feature is being introduced in phases and is expected to reach all Android and iOS users across India over the coming weeks. The service is powered by Bharat Connect, the digital bill payment network under the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS).

Through the new facility, WhatsApp users will be able to access around 22,722 billers across 30 categories. These include electricity, gas and water bills, FASTag recharges, insurance premiums, credit card payments and loan repayments.

Users can access the bill payment section by tapping the rupee icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen. The service will also allow them to check previous and upcoming payments, keep multiple accounts from the same service provider in one place and make payments using UPI, credit cards or debit cards.

Meta India managing director and country head Arun Srinivas said the company wants to make bill payments on WhatsApp as straightforward as sending a message. The move expands WhatsApp's role beyond communication and into everyday digital services, where users can increasingly complete routine transactions without switching between multiple applications.

The launch also strengthens WhatsApp's broader push into India's digital payments ecosystem. WhatsApp Pay processed about 150 million transactions in June 2026, more than four times the 37 million transactions recorded in June 2024. Despite the sharp increase, its share of overall UPI transaction volumes remained relatively small, rising from around 0.27 per cent in June 2024 to approximately 0.7 per cent in June 2026.

The bill payment rollout could help WhatsApp increase engagement with its payments infrastructure by giving users another reason to use the platform for financial transactions beyond person-to-person payments.

The development comes at a time of broader changes in Meta's strategy for WhatsApp and financial services. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had announced in June that CRED founder Kunal Shah would join the company as WhatsApp's next global CEO. Zuckerberg also announced an investment of around $900 million, or nearly Rs 8,550 crore, in the fintech company.

With bill payments now being added to WhatsApp's India offering, the platform is positioning itself as a more comprehensive digital utility, combining messaging, business services and payments within a single app.
