

Deoghar: Mohanpur police arrested two youths near Mohanpur Railway Station with an illegal firearm, a stolen motorcycle and other incriminating items. Superintendent of Police Praveen Pushkar disclosed the details of the operation during a media briefing on Monday. Police claimed that the duo had been involved in several cases of theft, snatching, robbery, dacoity and murder in Deoghar district and adjoining states. During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to their involvement in several criminal incidents.According to police, information was received on July 5 that some miscreants were attempting to snatch valuables from passers-by near Mohanpur Railway Station. Acting on the tip-off, a special team led by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Sadar) conducted a raid and apprehended the two suspects near the station. A search led to the recovery of a loaded country-made pistol, four live cartridges, four mobile phones, ?1,800 in cash and a stolen Hero Glamour motorcycle.The arrested accused have been identified as Rajeev Kumar Das (25) and Sanjeev Kumar Das (20), both residents of Aamgachhi under Rikhia police station in Deoghar district. Police said the two are brothers.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed that on June 18, 2026, they tried to stop a motorcyclist in Deoghar's Devipur police station area with the intention of robbing his motorcycle and mobile phone. When the rider refused to stop, they allegedly shot him dead. The victim, identified as Subhash Mandal alias Tinku Mandal, a resident of Amaiyasar, later succumbed to his injuries. A case in connection with the incident was registered at Devipur Police Station (Case No. 72/2026).
Police further claimed that the accused admitted to robbing a motorcycle and a mobile phone in the Jasidih police station area before committing a robbery at a Customer Service Point (CSP) centre in Jamui district. They also allegedly stole a motorcycle from Pathrol police station area in Deoghar, where Case No. 83/2026 was registered. In another incident, they allegedly abducted a man identified as Rupesh Das in the Jasidih area and robbed him of his mobile phone and cash. The case was registered as Jasidih Police Station Case No. 211/2026.
Following the latest arrest, Mohanpur Police Station registered Case No. 114/2026 against the duo under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with relevant sections of the Arms Act, 1959. Police records also show that Rajeev Kumar Das has previous criminal cases related to dacoity, robbery and criminal conspiracy registered at Mohanpur Police Station.The raid was carried out by the SDPO (Sadar), Jasidih Police Station in-charge Deepak Kumar, Mohanpur Police Station in-charge Sandeep Krishna, Devipur Police Station in-charge Prashant Kumar, along with personnel from the technical cell and the armed police force.
