Snatcher Shot During Daring Escape Bid After Seizing Cop's Pistol in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: A dramatic pre-dawn encounter in the wooded stretch behind Surya Mandir at Sidhgora in Jamshedpur ended with a snatcher being shot in the leg after he reportedly snatched a service pistol from a police officer and attempted a desperate escape.

The incident unfolded during a recovery operation conducted by the police following the arrest of two suspected members of a chain-snatching gang linked to a series of crimes across the city. Police sources said the duo had been apprehended on Monday evening after a woman was relieved of her gold chain. 

Acting swiftly on intelligence inputs, officers tracked the suspects, who were fleeing on a motorcycle. A chase ensued through the city before the motorcycle skidded near Surya Mandir. The accused allegedly opened fire on the pursuing police team and attempted to flee towards the JAP-6 campus, but were eventually overpowered and taken into custody.

During interrogation, the accused reportedly disclosed their involvement in several snatching incidents and revealed that stolen ornaments had been concealed in the forested area behind Surya Mandir. Acting on this information, a police team escorted the accused to the spot shortly after 3 a.m. on Tuesday to recover the valuables.

What followed was a startling turn of events.While leading the police through the jungle, one of the accused allegedly grabbed a policeman's service pistol and fired at the team before attempting to flee under the cover of darkness. 

Faced with an immediate threat, the police retaliated. A bullet struck the accused in the leg, bringing his escape bid to an abrupt end.

The injured man was overpowered and rushed to MGM Hospital for treatment. A sub-inspector sustained minor injuries during the operation.Senior police officials reached the spot soon after the incident. Investigators recovered the weapon, spent cartridges and other material evidence from the area. 

Police have launched a detailed probe into the gang's criminal network and are pursuing leads to identify and apprehend other associates believed to be involved in similar offences.

The encounter has once again highlighted the growing audacity of criminal elements operating in the city, prompting police to intensify patrolling and surveillance in vulnerable pockets.
