Jamshedpur: After days of intense heat and sultry conditions, residents of Jharkhand may soon get relief as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated favourable conditions for the further advance of the southwest monsoon across the state during the next four to five days.
According to the IMD's realised weather report issued on Thursday, temperatures continued to remain above normal across most parts of the state. Daltonganj recorded the highest maximum temperature at 42.4°C, while Jamshedpur sizzled at 39.0°C, nearly three degrees above normal. Chaibasa recorded 39.4°C, Bokaro Thermal 40.5°C and Ranchi 36.0°C.
The heat was equally uncomfortable during the night. Jamshedpur registered a minimum temperature of 28.8°C, more than three degrees above normal, making for a warm and humid night. Ranchi recorded a minimum temperature of 25.3°C.
Major urban centres, including Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Daltonganj, Bokaro Thermal and Chaibasa, reported no rainfall during the past 24 hours.
However, isolated showers were recorded in some districts. Hathgamhariya in West Singhbhum received 16.4 mm rainfall, followed by Kolebira in Simdega with 15.4 mm and Tenughat DVC in Bokaro with 12.8 mm.
Meteorologists attributed the prevailing weather conditions to the persistence of the seasonal trough extending from Punjab to Bihar through Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
Another trough stretching from East Uttar Pradesh to south coastal Andhra Pradesh via East Madhya Pradesh, East Vidarbha and Telangana remains active and extends up to 1.5 km above mean sea level.
Significantly, the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) now passes through Ranchi, indicating that the monsoon has reached the region and is poised for further advancement.
The IMD's monsoon watch stated that conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance into more parts of Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, Telangana and Chhattisgarh over the next few days.
“We are desperately waiting for rain. The afternoons have become unbearable, and even nights are very humid. A good spell of monsoon rain will bring much-needed relief,” said Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Sonari in Jamshedpur.
With monsoon currents strengthening, weather experts expect a gradual increase in cloud cover and rainfall activity across Jharkhand, bringing respite from the prolonged spell of heat and discomfort.
