Despite Monsoon Advent, Jharkhand Sizzles Under Intense Heat; IMD Issues Thunderstorm Alert

Jamshedpur: The southwest monsoon has advanced further into Jharkhand, but much-needed relief from the oppressive heat remains elusive as several parts of the state continue to reel under soaring temperatures.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has simultaneously issued a thunderstorm and lightning alert for the coming days, raising hopes of a gradual weather transition.

According to the IMD's weather report of the past 24- hours, Daltonganj recorded the state's highest maximum temperature at 40.4°C, while Jamshedpur touched 40.0°C, nearly four degrees above normal.

Ranchi recorded a comparatively moderate maximum temperature of 34.2°C. Major weather observatories reported no significant rainfall during the past 24 hours, although isolated showers were received in parts of Pakur, Ramgarh and Khunti districts.

The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 Kmph at isolated locations across the state.  On June 16, such weather activity is likely over most regions except the north-western districts.  Similar conditions are expected over southern and adjoining central parts of Jharkhand on June 17, while thunderstorms and gusty winds are likely across the state on June 18 and 19.

Weathermen noted that the southwest monsoon has further advanced into additional parts of Jharkhand and Bihar, and atmospheric conditions remain favourable for its continued progress over the next four to five days. Despite the monsoon's gradual advance, residents say the weather has become increasingly uncomfortable due to the combination of heat and humidity.

"The temperature is still feeling like peak summer. Even after sunset, there is hardly any relief. We are waiting for consistent monsoon rain rather than scattered showers," said Anil Singh, a resident of Sakchi in Jamshedpur.

"The humidity has made daily activities exhausting. Dark clouds gather frequently, but the rain disappears quickly. People are hoping for a proper monsoon spell soon," remarked Madhuri Saha, a resident of Kadma.

Weather experts have advised residents to remain alert during thunderstorm activity and avoid open fields, water bodies and isolated trees during lightning events. With the monsoon inching closer to full coverage across the state, a noticeable change in weather conditions is expected later this week.
