The opening two quarters saw a closely contested battle, with both teams creating opportunities but failing to find the breakthrough as the score remained goalless at half-time.

India finally broke the deadlock in the third quarter through a well-worked penalty corner routine. Navneet Kaur’s shot was cleverly redirected by Nikki Pradhan to Salima Tete, who calmly slotted the ball home to hand India the lead in the 33rd minute.

Japan responded almost immediately, drawing level just two minutes later when Hiramitsu Ai converted a penalty corner to make it 1-1.

With the match finely poised, Lalremsiami delivered the winner for India in the final quarter. In the 49th minute, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam sent a precise pass from the edge of the circle into the danger area, where Lalremsiami expertly deflected the ball into the net.

The victory keeps India unbeaten in the tournament and lifts them to the top of Pool A with six points from two wins, having earlier defeated the United States.

India will conclude their Pool A campaign against Uruguay on June 18, while Japan and the USA will battle for the remaining semi-final berth from the group.
