Los Angeles- Eight people were killed after a US Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bomber crashed shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base in California’s Mojave Desert on Monday, military officials confirmed. The aircraft was carrying eight people on a routine test mission when it went down at around 11:20 a.m. local time.

Speaking to reporters, Colonel James Hayes described the incident as a “terrible tragedy” and confirmed that all eight people on board had lost their lives. The victims included a mix of military personnel, government civilians and contractors.

The Air Force said the B-52 was conducting a routine test flight related to a radar modernization programme when it crashed. Initial assessments indicated that the accident was not survivable. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

The aircraft involved was a B-52 Stratofortress, one of the longest-serving bombers in the US Air Force fleet. First introduced in the 1950s, the B-52 remains a key component of America's strategic bomber force and is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons. The aircraft is currently undergoing extensive upgrades intended to keep it in service into the 2050s.

Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims, and the investigation is expected to take several months.
