Jamshedpur : Jharkhand is likely to witness widespread thunderstorm activity, lightning strikes and strong gusty winds over the next several days, according to the latest forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather office has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and wind speeds of 40-50 kmph at isolated places across the state on June 3 and June 6.
Similar weather conditions are expected over eastern and adjoining central districts on June 4 and 5. Thunderstorm activity is likely over southern and central parts of Jharkhand on June 7, while south-eastern districts may be affected on June 8.
The IMD has cautioned that wind speeds could intensify locally during thunderstorm events, with gusts reaching up to 75 kmph in some areas.
Meteorologists attributed the prevailing weather conditions to two active trough systems extending across central and eastern India, creating favourable conditions for cloud formation, rainfall, lightning and strong winds over Jharkhand.
The spell of cloudy weather and intermittent rain has brought much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat. Maximum temperatures in most parts of the state are currently 2°C to 5°C below normal and are expected to remain below average over the next few days.
“The weather has become much more comfortable compared to the intense heat we faced recently. However, the possibility of strong winds and lightning means people should stay cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during storms,” said Bistupur resident Rakesh Sharma.
The IMD has advised residents to avoid open fields, water bodies, electric poles and taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
People have also been urged to monitor weather updates and follow safety precautions to minimise the risk of lightning-related incidents.
While the cooler conditions are expected to provide relief from heat stress, authorities warned that strong thunderstorms could lead to localised disruptions, including uprooted trees, damage to temporary structures and power outages.
