Ranchi: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) is preparing to launch a strict drive against lodges and hostels operating without valid licenses in the state capital. With the rapid growth of the hostel and lodging business in the city, the civic body has made it clear that violation of rules will no longer be ignored.
According to official information, nearly 10,000 lodges and hostels are currently operating across Ranchi, but only 81 of them possess valid licenses issued by the municipal corporation. The figures highlight the large-scale operation of unauthorized establishments in the city.
The municipal corporation had already issued notices in March directing all operators to obtain trade licenses and necessary permissions. It had also warned that action would be taken against those running such businesses illegally. However, a majority of operators have still not complied.
Municipal officials said a special inspection drive will soon begin. During the checks, authorities will verify trade licenses, fire safety arrangements, building safety standards, sanitation facilities, and other required documents. Violations may lead to fines, sealing of premises, and legal action.
Areas such as Lalpur, Bariatu, Harmu, Kanke Road, Lower Bazar, and Doranda have a large number of lodges and hostels, mostly occupied by students, competitive exam aspirants, and working professionals from outside the city. This has made safety compliance and legal documentation a major concern.
Officials also stated that many hostels and lodges are functioning in residential areas without proper registration, while several lack adequate fire safety measures, posing serious risks in case of an accident. The corporation is now preparing area-wise data for a detailed verification campaign.
Meanwhile, news of the impending crackdown has created concern among hostel and lodge operators, many of whom have started updating their licenses and documents.
