Capital Drowning in Garbage — Serious Questions Raised Over Ranchi’s Sanitation System

Ranchi: Jharkhand’s capital, Ranchi, is currently grappling with severe sanitation issues and a deteriorating waste management system. Almost every part of the city is witnessing piles of garbage. Waste is openly dumped along roadsides, in markets, outside residential colonies, and near major intersections, causing increasing inconvenience to residents. The situation has worsened to the point where temporary dumping sites have emerged in the heart of the city, raising serious concerns about the functioning of the municipal corporation.

Prominent locations, including Birsa Munda Park and other public places, are also surrounded by heaps of garbage. Waste collection vehicles often spill dirty water and litter across the roads throughout the day, spreading foul odors. In many areas, the stench has become unbearable, forcing pedestrians to cover their noses while passing by.

With rising temperatures, the problem is becoming even more alarming. Rotting garbage on the streets is not only producing a strong stench but also increasing the risk of mosquito-borne diseases and infections. Locals say the city no longer resembles a modern capital but rather an open dumping ground. They allege that the municipal corporation has failed to ensure regular and effective cleaning.

Ranchi has also been slipping in cleanliness rankings. From being ranked 23rd in 2021, the city fell to 37th place by 2025. Given the current situation, residents sarcastically remark that if conditions do not improve, Ranchi might top the list for the dirtiest city in the country by 2026.

Even public representatives have begun questioning the municipal body’s functioning. Mayor Roshni Khalkho expressed her displeasure, stating that “Ranchi Municipal Corporation has now turned into a ‘hell corporation.’” Her remark has further intensified the debate over the city’s sanitation crisis.

Residents say Ranchi’s identity is shifting from a clean city to one plagued by garbage and foul smells. They are demanding regular cleaning, scientific waste disposal, and a permanent dumping system to protect the city from worsening filth and health hazards.
