Jamshedpur: In a renewed push against Left-Wing Extremism, security forces engaged in a fierce encounter with Maoists on Wednesday in the dense Saranda forests of neighbouring West Singhbhum district, signalling sustained pressure on insurgent networks in one of their last remaining strongholds.
The gunfight erupted around 10 a.m. in the forested stretch between Marang Ponga and Baliba villages under the Chhota Nagra police station limits, when a joint team of the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), Jharkhand Jaguar, and district police launched a coordinated operation based on specific intelligence inputs.
The information indicated the presence of a heavily armed Maoist squad led by wanted commander Misir Besra, who carries a bounty of Rs 1 crore and has long evaded capture in the Kolhan region. As the forces began a strategic cordon-and-search operation, the Maoists reportedly opened indiscriminate fire in an attempt to break the encirclement.
The security personnel responded with calibrated and sustained firing, gradually gaining the upper hand despite the challenges posed by the thick foliage and rugged terrain. Preliminary inputs suggest that at least four Maoists were neutralised in the exchange, while several others are believed to have been injured.
However, official confirmation is awaited as search teams continue combing the encounter site for bodies, weapons, and other evidence. Senior Maoist operatives, including Mochu, Sagen Angaria, and Ashwin, were also believed to be part of the group, underlining the significance of the operation.
One CoBRA jawan sustained injuries during the encounter and was initially stabilised before being airlifted to Ranchi for advanced treatment. Officials have described his condition as stable. The latest encounter comes amid a series of intensified operations in the Saranda belt over the past few months.
Security forces have repeatedly mounted deep-penetration drives in the forest, recovering arms, explosives, and dismantling Maoist hideouts. Several encounters and arrests in recent weeks have disrupted the movement of insurgent leaders, forcing them to frequently shift bases and operate in smaller, scattered units.
Saranda, once considered an impregnable Maoist bastion due to its vast expanse and difficult terrain, has increasingly witnessed coordinated offensives by security agencies aimed at reclaiming control and restoring administrative presence.
The ongoing operations are part of a broader strategy to neutralise top Maoist leadership and weaken their logistical networks across Jharkhand’s Kolhan region. Following Wednesday’s encounter, forces have further tightened the cordon in the area, with reinforcements deployed to block potential escape routes. The operation is ongoing, and officials believe it could deliver another significant blow to Maoist activities in the region.
