Heatwave threat looms over Jharkhand, brief showers forecast this weekend

Jamshedpur: A fresh weather assessment by the India Meteorological Department signals a sharp build-up of heat across Jharkhand, with temperatures already hovering near the 40°C mark in several districts and dry conditions persisting statewide. Recent observations show Jamshedpur as the hottest location at 39.6°C, closely followed by Chaibasa (39.4°C) and Daltonganj (38.8°C). Bokaro recorded 37.5°C, while Ranchi remained comparatively moderate at 35.6°C.

Night temperatures have shown a contrasting dip, with Gumla reporting the lowest minimum at 14.4°C. Notably, no rainfall has been recorded across any observation centres, underlining the prevailing dry spell.

Meteorologists indicate that the current pattern is being driven by a combination of atmospheric systems, including an east-west trough extending from northern plains to the northeast and a north-south trough cutting across central India down to Tamil Nadu.

These systems are contributing to unstable conditions while also allowing heat to intensify over the region.“Temperatures are expected to rise further by around 3 to 5 degrees Celsius over the next few days, which could push several districts into heatwave conditions,” an IMD official said.

Another official added, “While some parts may see light rain and thunder activity, it will be highly localised and insufficient to bring any widespread relief.”The forecast suggests that April 15 will remain largely clear and dry, followed by partly cloudy skies on April 16.

A slight change is expected on April 17, when isolated areas in northeastern Jharkhand may receive light rain, while the rest of the state could witness cloud formation accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Heatwave conditions are also likely to develop in isolated pockets around the same period, particularly outside the northeastern belt. On April 18, southern districts may experience brief spells of light rain, offering temporary respite before dry and clear weather returns on April 19.

Despite these intermittent changes, the overall trend points towards intensifying heat, raising concerns for public health, agriculture, and water availability. With rising temperatures and limited rainfall, residents are likely to face increasingly harsh summer conditions in the days ahead, as Jharkhand moves deeper into a prolonged dry and hot phase.
