Early school hours in Jamshedpur as heat intensifies

Jamshedpur: Responding swiftly to the surge in temperatures and escalating heatwave conditions, private schools across Jamshedpur have collectively decided to revise their academic schedule, prioritising student safety and well-being.

The new timings will come into effect from Monday, April 20. Under the revised arrangement, classes will begin at 6:45 AM and conclude by 11:30 AM, ensuring that students are not exposed to the harsh afternoon heat.

The decision has been taken under the guidance of the Association of Jharkhand Unaided Private Educational Institutions (AJUPEI), with all member schools reaching a unanimous consensus.Association Vice President Sharat Chandran confirmed that the move is a proactive response to the prevailing extreme weather conditions.

He noted that rising temperatures have been causing considerable discomfort, making it imperative for institutions to act in the best interest of students.

Weather forecasts indicate that temperatures in the city may soar up to 44°C in the coming days, prompting urgent preventive measures.  Schools have, therefore, adjusted their schedules to minimise health risks such as heat exhaustion and dehydration among children.

Parents will be formally notified of the revised timings, and schools have been directed to ensure strict compliance.

The decision has been met with appreciation from the parent community. “This is a much-needed step. The afternoons have become unbearable, and sending children to school during peak heat was a constant worry,” said a parent of a primary school student.

Another parent echoed similar sentiments, stating, “The revised timing brings great relief. It shows that schools are sensitive to children’s health and are taking responsible decisions in challenging weather conditions.”

The move is being widely regarded as a timely and thoughtful intervention, with authorities urging continued caution as the region grapples with intense summer conditions.
