Hamburg — India’s Veer Chotrani delivered a standout performance at the Hamburg Open, advancing to the men’s quarterfinals with a commanding straight-games victory over Germany’s eighth seed Raphael Kandra.
Ranked world No. 47, Chotrani dominated from the outset, wrapping up the second-round clash in just 30 minutes with an 11-8, 11-7, 11-7 win to book his place in the last eight.
However, it was the end of the road for fellow Indians Abhay Singh and Ramit Tandon, both of whom bowed out in the second round. Fifth seed Singh went down to England’s Sam Todd 9-11, 11-7, 4-11, 2-11, while seventh seed Tandon lost to Hungary’s Balázs Farkas 10-12, 11-4, 5-11, 9-11.
Todd, who has already clinched two Copper-level titles this season, produced an impressive display to overcome Singh, setting up a quarterfinal clash with third seed Fares Dessouky. Reflecting on the match, Todd acknowledged Singh’s recent form and said familiarity from training together helped him prepare effectively for the encounter.
In the women’s draw, India’s Joshna Chinappa, a former world No. 10, was knocked out after losing to New Zealand’s eighth seed Joelle King 11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 11-4.
Elsewhere, Spain’s Marta Dominguez reached a major milestone by entering the quarterfinals of a Bronze-level event for the first time. She defeated England’s sixth seed Emily Whitlock, ending a streak of six previous losses to her opponent with a 11-7, 9-11, 11-5, 11-3 victory.
