Saranda under siege: Massive security sweep pushes top Maoist leader on the defensive

Jamshedpur: In one of the largest coordinated anti-insurgency operations in recent months, security forces launched a sweeping action across the dense Saranda forests of West Singhbhum district, deploying nearly 5,000 personnel to dominate a 21-kilometre stretch believed to be a stronghold of Maoist activities.

The operation, carried out jointly by the Jharkhand Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and specialized anti-Naxal units, was initiated following credible intelligence inputs about the presence of senior Maoist leader Misir Besra—who carries a bounty of  Rs 1 crore along with his close associates.

Officials stated that the forces strategically cordoned off key forest  corridors and suspected hideouts, effectively squeezing the movement of insurgents and disrupting their logistical network. 

The drive  involved advanced surveillance techniques, including drone monitoring and ground-level combing operations, ensuring a multi-layered security cover.

Sources indicate that sustained pressure from the security forces has forced Misir Besra and his group  to retreat deeper into the forest, adopting defensive positions and attempting to evade contact. 

While no direct encounter has been reported so far, intermittent signs of Maoist presence—such as abandoned camps and movement trails—have been detected during the search.

A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the operation as a “decisive step towards dismantling the remaining Maoist infrastructure in Saranda,” long considered one of the most challenging terrains due to its thick foliage and difficult topography.

The Saranda forest, once a  Maoist bastion, has witnessed intensified security interventions in recent years, leading to a gradual weakening of insurgent influence. 

However, sporadic regrouping attempts by top leaders like Besra have kept the region under constant watch.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to sustaining the pressure, emphasizing that such large-scale operations will continue until the area is fully sanitized and brought under stable administrative control.

Meanwhile, local villagers have been advised to remain cautious and cooperate with security forces, as the operation progresses through sensitive pockets of the forest.

The unfolding operation marks a significant moment in Jharkhand’s ongoing fight against Left-Wing Extremism, signaling a renewed push to reclaim one of its most strategically critical forest belts.
