Padma Lakshmi shares 1977 Chennai summer photo: Can feel mosquitoes, hot Coromandel sun

India-born supermodel, television host, producer, cookbook author and actor Padma Lakshmi has taken a trip down memory lane, sharing a childhood photograph from 1977 and recalling her summer memories in Chennai with her family.

Lakshmi shared the photograph on Instagram, featuring herself and her family members sitting on her grandfather's 1969 Ambassador car. She recalled that years later, in the 1980s, she learned to drive the car on the road to Mahabalipuram.

Sharing details about the people in the photograph, Lakshmi said her aunt Banu, who is seen on the right, taught her cooking and multiplication tables. She also recalled how her aunt would make her stay in a room while the rest of the family watched Doordarshan on television.

Lakshmi identified her mother in the photograph, describing her as glamorous and wearing glasses after arriving from New York for her grandfather's 60th birthday ceremony. She also introduced her cousin Aarti and other family members featured in the picture.

Recalling her childhood summers in India, Lakshmi described memories of the hot Coromandel sun and mosquitoes. She said her grandmother would not allow the children to go outside until the sun had become less intense in the late afternoon or early evening.

"Hope you enjoy this throwback photo," Lakshmi wrote while sharing the nostalgic picture.

Born in India, Lakshmi moved to the United States as a child. She began her career as a model before moving into television and other areas of entertainment.

She has authored five books and rose to prominence as the host of the television cooking competition 'Top Chef'. Lakshmi also created, hosted and executive produced the docuseries 'Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi'.

She has received 16 Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
