Indian equity markets extended their upward momentum on Monday, with the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 hitting fresh record highs, supported by positive global cues and a recovery in the Indian rupee.
The Sensex climbed to an all-time high of 38,281.70 points, surpassing its previous record of 38,076.23. The Nifty50 also touched a new peak of 11,551.85, comfortably moving above its earlier high of 11,495.20.
Strong buying interest was particularly visible in capital goods, automobile and oil and gas stocks, according to market analysts. The gains reflected improved investor sentiment following supportive developments in global markets and some recovery in the domestic currency.
At around 12.24 p.m., the broader Nifty50 was trading at 11,548.30, up 77.55 points or 0.68 per cent from its previous close.
The 30-share Sensex, which opened at 38,075.07, was trading at 38,271.05 points, gaining 323.17 points or 0.85 per cent over its previous close of 37,947.88. The index had touched an intraday low of 38,050.69.
Among the major Sensex gainers were Larsen & Toubro, Tata Motors, Tata Motors DVR, ONGC and Tata Steel. On the other hand, Infosys, Maruti Suzuki, ITC, Power Grid and ICICI Bank were among the prominent laggards.
The fresh records marked another strong session for Indian equities, with investors showing greater confidence despite ongoing concerns around global trade and currency volatility.
The rupee’s recovery was particularly significant for market sentiment, as a stronger domestic currency can ease concerns over imported inflation and external funding pressures. The combination of firm global markets, sector-specific buying and improved currency sentiment helped the domestic benchmarks maintain their record-setting run.
