54 Injured, 18 Missing in Explosion at Qatar's Key Ras Laffan Gas Hub

Doha: At least 54 people were injured and 18 others are missing after a powerful explosion and fire struck Qatar's Ras Laffan industrial city, one of the world's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) hubs, late Sunday night.

The blast occurred at the Barzan gas supply facility while engineers were working to restore operations after earlier disruptions linked to regional tensions. The explosion triggered a massive fire, prompting emergency services to launch a large-scale rescue and firefighting operation.

State-owned QatarEnergy confirmed that the incident happened during the restart of parts of the export terminal. The company said the explosion broke out at the Barzan facility as technical teams were bringing systems back online.

While the full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed, Qatar's Interior Ministry said 54 people were injured and search teams were continuing efforts to locate 18 workers who remain unaccounted for.

The Barzan gas facility is a vital part of Qatar's energy infrastructure, producing nearly 1.4 billion standard cubic feet of gas daily. Its output plays a crucial role in powering domestic electricity generation and desalination plants that supply water across the country.

Officials noted that the restart operation followed earlier disruptions caused by the recent regional conflict. The Ras Laffan complex had reportedly suffered damage during previous missile attacks, forcing partial suspension of operations.

The Barzan project is jointly operated by QatarEnergy along with international partners, including ExxonMobil, which has not yet released a detailed statement on the incident.

As one of the world's most strategic LNG export hubs, any prolonged disruption at Ras Laffan could impact global energy supplies, particularly in Asia and Europe, which depend heavily on Qatari natural gas.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Emergency and security personnel continue search-and-rescue operations, while officials have not yet confirmed whether the blast resulted from an accident or any external attack.

The incident comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region, where repeated attacks on energy infrastructure have raised concerns over the security of critical oil and gas facilities.
