Seoul: Strong demand for sport utility vehicles (SUVs) helped South Korean automakers Hyundai Motor and Kia register robust sales growth in the Indian passenger vehicle market during the first five months of 2026, according to industry data released on Sunday.
Data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed that Hyundai Motor Company sold 266,317 passenger vehicles in India between January and May, marking a 10.1 per cent increase over the same period last year.
Kia Corporation posted an even stronger performance, with sales rising 14.6 per cent year-on-year during the five-month period.

Hyundai emerged as the fourth-largest passenger vehicle manufacturer in India, behind Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra. Kia ranked sixth, following Toyota.
Together, the two Hyundai Motor Group companies sold 405,514 vehicles in India during the January-May period, representing an 11.6 per cent increase compared to a year earlier.
SUVs continued to be the biggest growth driver for both brands. Hyundai's popular models, the Hyundai Creta and Hyundai Venue, accounted for more than half of the company's total sales during the period.
At Kia, the Kia Seltos and Kia Sonet remained the company's best-selling models, contributing 76.3 per cent of its total sales in India.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor India increased prices across its model range by up to ₹12,800 from June 1, citing rising input costs, higher commodity prices and increased operational expenses. The company said the price revision varies depending on the model and variant.
According to the automaker, while it has made efforts to optimise costs and reduce the burden on customers, a portion of the increased expenses had to be passed on through what it described as a nominal price hike.
