Jaipur— A fire broke out at the Pachpadra Refinery in Barmer, Rajasthan, on Monday, just a day ahead of its scheduled inauguration, prompting a swift emergency response and brief concern among officials.
The blaze reportedly started in the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU), sending thick smoke billowing into the air. Safety systems were immediately activated, and workers in the affected zone were evacuated as a precaution.
Around 20 fire tenders were deployed to the site, with emergency teams and refinery staff working together to contain the situation using in-built fire suppression mechanisms. Authorities later confirmed that the fire had been brought under control after sustained efforts.
Officials from the Chief Minister’s Office described the incident as “minor” and said the fire was successfully extinguished without causing major disruption. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined and will be investigated.
The incident occurred shortly before Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma was expected to visit the refinery to review preparations for the high-profile event.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully raised concerns over the timing of the incident, questioning the preparedness and safety arrangements ahead of the inauguration.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to dedicate the refinery to the nation during his visit, marking a significant milestone in India’s energy and industrial development.
The refinery-cum-petrochemical complex, developed as a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and the Rajasthan government, has been built with an investment of over Rs 79,450 crore. With a capacity of nine MMTPA, it is among the country’s largest greenfield projects, integrating advanced refining and petrochemical production facilities.
