US, India Near Deal on Critical Minerals Pact: Ambassador Sergio Gor

New Delhi— The United States and India are close to finalising an agreement on critical minerals that could significantly strengthen strategic cooperation and supply chains between the two countries, US Ambassador Sergio Gor said on Friday.

Speaking at the India Today Conclave 2026, Gor said the growing engagement between the two nations reflects a deeper partnership that goes beyond traditional trade ties. His remarks come shortly after both sides agreed on a framework for a Bilateral Trade Agreement aimed at expanding economic cooperation.

“The US and India are paying close attention to each other, which reflects something deeper — a partnership that is continuing to grow stronger,” Gor said, adding that the relationship is entering a new phase of strategic collaboration.

He noted that under the leadership of Donald Trump, ties between the two countries could reach “global heights”.

“What was needed was momentum and opportunities, and we are now moving towards unlocking those opportunities and that potential,” he said.

Gor emphasised that the partnership between the two nations extends beyond tariffs and market access, focusing instead on securing resources and strengthening supply chains that will play a critical role in the global economy in the coming decades.

He highlighted critical minerals as a key area of cooperation, describing reliable and diversified supply chains for such resources as essential for both economic growth and national security.

According to the ambassador, the two countries are very close to finalising an agreement that would help secure supplies needed for advanced manufacturing, energy systems, and emerging technologies.

“Within the next few months, there will be a big announcement on this front,” Gor said.

He also pointed to growing collaboration in high-technology sectors, including the semiconductor industry. Referring to recent developments in India, he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently inaugurated new semiconductor facilities, reflecting the expanding partnership between the two countries.

Gor added that the United States is also prepared to support India’s rising energy needs as a reliable supplier of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

During the discussion, the ambassador also mentioned the latest cover of India Today magazine featuring President Trump and Prime Minister Modi, saying it even caught attention at the White House.

“I took a picture of the cover and sent it to President Trump, and he posted it on Truth Social,” Gor added.
