Tokyo: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that India and Japan have outlined a ten-year roadmap for their partnership, with investment, innovation, economic security, and technology as key pillars.
After his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, PM Modi said:
“We have set a target of 10 trillion yen investment from Japan into India over the next decade. Special focus will be on connecting small and medium enterprises and startups from both countries. Our roadmap also includes cooperation in health, environment, mobility, people-to-people exchanges, and state-prefecture partnerships.”
Highlighting energy and climate cooperation, Modi said:
“Our Joint Credit Mechanism is a milestone in the green partnership. Alongside, we are launching the Sustainable Fuels Initiative and the Battery Supply Chain Partnership.”
The two leaders also launched the Economic Security Cooperation Initiative, aimed at strengthening collaboration in critical and strategic sectors such as semiconductors and rare earth minerals. Modi stressed that Japanese technology and Indian talent are a winning combination, with progress expected not only in high-speed rail but also in ports, aviation, and shipbuilding under the Next Generation Mobility Partnership.
The Prime Minister welcomed the agreement between ISRO and Japan’s JAXA on cooperation in the Chandrayaan-5 mission, calling it a symbol of humanity’s progress in space.
On human resource exchange, Modi announced that 500,000 people will participate in India-Japan exchanges over the next five years, including 50,000 skilled Indians contributing to Japan’s economy. He added that ties will now expand beyond Delhi and Tokyo to link Indian states with Japanese prefectures, opening new opportunities in trade, tourism, education, and culture.
On security, Modi said India and Japan share common concerns about terrorism and cybersecurity, and will strengthen cooperation in defence industry and maritime security.
“The India-Japan partnership is built on mutual trust, reflects our national priorities, and is guided by shared values. Together, we share a common dream of peace, progress, and prosperity — for our peoples and for the world,” Modi concluded.
