Bengaluru to Host FIDE-Rated Rapid Chess Tournament Ahead of Global Chess League Season 4

Bengaluru is set to witness a major grassroots chess event on August 26, with the city hosting a FIDE-rated Rapid Chess Tournament at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium. The tournament is expected to attract up to 1,000 players from different age groups and skill levels.

The event is being organised under the Road to GCL initiative as Bengaluru prepares to welcome some of the biggest names in world chess for Season 4 of the Global Chess League (GCL). With a cash prize pool of Rs 4 lakh, the tournament will give participants an opportunity to compete in a professionally organised, FIDE-rated rapid format while experiencing the build-up to one of the sport's biggest team competitions.

The initiative is aimed at taking the excitement of the Global Chess League beyond professional players and bringing it closer to the city's growing chess community. For young and aspiring players in particular, the tournament will provide an opportunity to gain competitive experience in a recognised format and compete alongside fellow chess enthusiasts.

Participants will also stand a chance to receive passes for GCL Season 4, allowing them to watch top international players compete live. Six global franchises will take part in the league, which follows a distinctive team-based format featuring both male and female players across six boards.

The Road to GCL programme is part of the league's broader effort to make chess more accessible and community-focused. Hosting a tournament for as many as 1,000 players is expected to give local players a chance to compete on a large platform while building greater interest in competitive chess.

GCL Season 4 will feature several leading names from the international chess circuit, including defending champion Magnus Carlsen, five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, Arjun Erigaisi, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Levon Aronian, Javokhir Sindarov and Nihal Sarin.

After the Road to GCL event, Bengaluru will host the fourth season of the Global Chess League from September 5 to 13 at The Lalit Ashok. The tournament marks the league's return to India for a second consecutive season and will bring together established champions, global stars and promising young players in the battle for the GCL title.

The combination of a large-scale FIDE-rated tournament and the arrival of elite international players is expected to give Bengaluru's chess community a significant boost, creating opportunities for both competitive players and fans to engage more closely with the sport.
