England made a confident start to their first innings after India were bowled out for 329, reaching 46/0 at lunch on the second day of the third Test at Nottingham on Sunday.
Openers Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings negotiated the Indian bowling attack comfortably during the morning session. Cook was unbeaten on 21, while Jennings was 20 not out as England went into the lunch break 283 runs behind India.
Cook faced 30 deliveries and struck three boundaries, while Jennings also hit three fours from his 25 balls. The experienced opening pair showed patience and ensured England did not lose a wicket before lunch.
India, who resumed the day on 307/6, were unable to add many runs to their overnight total. Rishabh Pant, unbeaten overnight on 22, added only two runs before being dismissed for 24.
India’s lower order also failed to provide the expected late-innings boost, with Ravichandran Ashwin making 14, Mohammed Shami scoring three and Ishant Sharma remaining unbeaten on one. Jasprit Bumrah was dismissed without scoring.
For England, James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes took three wickets each as the hosts wrapped up India’s innings at 329.
India’s total was built largely around a strong contribution from captain Virat Kohli, who narrowly missed a century with 97, while Ajinkya Rahane made a valuable 81.
The early success of Cook and Jennings gave England an ideal response after their bowlers had restricted India to a manageable first-innings total, setting up an important phase of the Test match.
Brief scores:
India: 329 all out (Virat Kohli 97, Ajinkya Rahane 81; James Anderson 3/64, Stuart Broad 3/72).
England: 46/0 (Alastair Cook 21*, Keaton Jennings 20*) at lunch on Day 2.
