India’s data centre capacity quadruples to 1,500 MW since 2020: Jitin Prasada

New Delhi — India’s data centre capacity has grown more than four times in the last five years, reaching over 1,500 MW in 2025 from 375 MW in 2020, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Jitin Prasada informed Parliament.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, the minister said the sharp rise highlights the government’s push to strengthen digital infrastructure and widen access to technology. He added that the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making technology more accessible and inclusive.

Prasada noted that the government is actively supporting the expansion of data centres across the country to improve the delivery of digital services.

As per the data shared, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai together lead with 790 MW of operational capacity. Chennai follows with 305 MW, while Bengaluru has 182 MW, Hyderabad 152 MW, and Delhi-NCR/Noida 76 MW. Other cities such as Pune and Kolkata contribute a smaller share.

The minister also highlighted developments in undersea connectivity, stating that four submarine cable systems are currently being commissioned. These include India Europe Xpress by Reliance Jio, SEA-ME-WE-6 and 2Africa by Bharti Airtel, and the Raman Cable by Sify Technologies, with landing points mainly in Mumbai and Chennai.

Additionally, three more submarine cable projects are in the pipeline, led by Tata Communications, Reliance Jio, and Sify Technologies, for which proposals have been submitted to the Department of Telecommunications.

However, Prasada clarified that there are currently no plans to set up new sub-sea gateway stations.

He further pointed out that the Reserve Bank of India has mandated that all payment system data must be stored within the country. This move is aimed at ensuring a secure and reliable digital ecosystem.

Overall, the government’s policies are focused on building sufficient data storage capacity within India while also strengthening cybersecurity measures, he added.
