New Delhi: If you struggle with memory lapses or stress, indulging in a piece of dark chocolate or a handful of berries might help, according to a new animal study. Researchers have found that these foods, rich in flavanols, can enhance memory and reduce stress levels.
The study, conducted by scientists at Japan’s Shibaura Institute of Technology and published in the journal Current Research in Food Science, revealed that flavanols — compounds abundant in cocoa and berries — can trigger physiological responses similar to those produced by physical exercise. These include activation of the central nervous system, improved attention, arousal, and memory, while also offering protection against neuronal damage.
“Stress responses elicited by flavanols in this study are similar to those induced by physical exercise. Thus, moderate intake of flavanols, despite their poor bioavailability, can improve health and quality of life,” said Dr. Yasuyuki Fujii from the Shibaura Institute.
To explore the neurological effects of flavanols, researchers conducted experiments on 10-week-old mice, administering oral doses of 25 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg of body weight. A control group received only distilled water.
The flavanol-fed mice demonstrated higher motor activity, increased exploratory behavior, and significantly improved learning and memory compared to the control group.
Further analysis showed enhanced neurotransmitter activity in several brain regions, with elevated levels of dopamine, levodopa, norepinephrine, and normetanephrine — chemicals essential for motivation, attention, stress response, and arousal.
The study also found that key enzymes involved in noradrenaline synthesis and transport — including tyrosine hydroxylase, dopamine-beta-hydroxylase, and vesicular monoamine transporter 2 — were upregulated, suggesting a strengthened noradrenergic signaling system.
Additionally, biochemical tests revealed higher urinary levels of catecholamines (stress-related hormones) and increased activity in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), a brain region crucial for stress regulation.
The findings suggest that moderate consumption of flavanol-rich foods such as dark chocolate and berries may offer cognitive and stress-relieving benefits similar to mild exercise.
