Centre Aims to Build Evidence-Based Criminal Justice System: Amit Shah

Kolkata – Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday emphasized that the Central government’s primary objective is to establish a foolproof, evidence-based criminal justice system — one that leaves no room for doubt or debate, ensuring justice for victims and accountability for offenders.

Speaking at the inauguration of the new Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) building in Rajarhat, on the outskirts of Kolkata, Shah highlighted the crucial role of technology in transforming the justice system.

“Our aim is to move from a debate-based to an evidence-based criminal justice system. This ensures that no guilty person escapes due to lack of evidence, and at the same time, victims receive the justice they deserve,” Shah said.

He stressed the need for law enforcement and forensic investigators to stay ahead of criminals through advanced technology. “With tools like DNA sequencing, we’ve solved crimes that were decades old. Forensic audits have helped crack complex financial frauds,” he added.

Shah also announced a significant push toward forensic modernization. The Centre will invest ?2,800 crore in upgrading forensic science infrastructure nationwide. Additionally, a National Forensic Data Centre, with a budget of ?200 crore, will be established to house and analyze vast amounts of forensic data using artificial intelligence — streamlining efforts to build a reliable and efficient justice system.

Later in the day, Shah is set to address a political rally at Netaji Indoor Stadium in central Kolkata, where he is expected to set the agenda for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. State BJP leaders from all levels are expected to attend the event.
