Jan Suraaj leader Prashant Kishor formally took oath as the newly elected MLA from Bihar's Bankipur Assembly constituency on Monday, marking his entry into the state Legislative Assembly as an elected representative.
Bihar Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar administered the oath to Kishor in his chamber. The ceremony was held separately because the Assembly is currently not in session. The monsoon session has concluded, while the next session is still some time away, allowing the Speaker to administer the oath to a newly elected member in his chamber.
Kishor arrived at the Assembly accompanied by senior Jan Suraaj leaders and supporters. His election to the Bankipur seat followed the by-election held on July 30, with the results declared on August 3.
Kishor defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by 19,246 votes. The RJD candidate finished third and lost the security deposit.
Following his victory, Kishor had said that people in Bankipur should begin seeing visible changes within two to three months. He has identified employment, education, ration distribution and social security as some of his immediate priorities for the constituency.
One of his major commitments is to facilitate private-sector employment opportunities for around 10,000 young people. He has also spoken about helping children gain access to private schools and improving the functioning of the ration-card system within three months.
Kishor has additionally proposed a monthly pension of Rs 1,100 for people aged 60 and above, placing social security among the key issues he intends to pursue.
The new MLA is also looking beyond his constituency. Jan Suraaj is preparing for the upcoming Teacher and Graduate constituency elections to the Bihar Legislative Council as well as the Panchayat elections in the state. Kishor is also expected to undertake another statewide tour as the organisation seeks to expand its political presence.
His oath-taking marks a transition from campaigning to legislative work. The coming months will therefore be important in determining how Kishor converts his electoral promises into constituency-level initiatives and how effectively he uses his new position inside the Bihar Assembly to raise issues concerning Bankipur and the wider state.
