The health department has cancelled the licence of Tulip Hospital, located along Ring Road in Ranchi, following a dispute and alleged physical altercation involving the family members of a patient and hospital staff.

The action came after the health department ordered an investigation into the incident. Acting on the directions of the Health Minister, an inquiry committee visited the hospital on Saturday and examined the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.

The committee reviewed the sequence of events and also examined the role of the hospital management and the arrangements and functioning of the facility.

Following the inquiry, the committee held the hospital responsible in connection with the incident. Based on its findings, the health department initiated action to cancel the hospital’s licence.

The incident had occurred a few days ago when a dispute between the family members of a patient and hospital employees escalated into a physical confrontation. After the matter came to the attention of the authorities, the health department treated it as a serious issue and ordered a detailed inquiry.

The cancellation of the licence is a major setback for the hospital management. The departmental action has also raised questions about the hospital’s management practices, internal arrangements and handling of disputes involving patients and their families.

The latest action underlines the health department’s stated approach of taking serious incidents at private healthcare facilities into consideration when assessing their compliance and functioning.
