Rybakina, Sabalenka set for blockbuster US Open final with No. 1 ranking on the line

The US Open is set for a high-stakes finale as defending champion Aryna Sabalenka takes on Elena Rybakina in a rematch of this year's Australian Open final, with the world No. 1 ranking and another Grand Slam title both at stake.

The two leading seeds have taken contrasting paths to the championship match at Flushing Meadows, but neither has shown signs of backing down under pressure.

Sabalenka, chasing an unprecedented third consecutive US Open title, booked her place in the final with a commanding 7-5, 6-2 victory over American Jessica Pegula. The Belarusian has been particularly dominant on Arthur Ashe Stadium, dropping just one set in six matches.

She also enters the final carrying a remarkable 20-match winning streak at the US Open, dating back to 2024. Her aggressive baseline game has again been one of the defining features of her campaign.

Sabalenka has hit 170 winners, the most among the women competing in New York, while converting 25 break points, also the tournament's best tally. Her toughest test came in the quarter-finals against Linda Noskova, where she survived a deciding-set super tie-break 10-7 before producing a much more authoritative performance against Pegula.

Rybakina's route to the final has been more complicated. The Kazakh star arrived in New York with questions surrounding her fitness after suffering a left ankle problem in Cincinnati, but those concerns have been overshadowed by the quality of her tennis throughout the tournament.

She has already defeated two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka and produced comeback victories over Qinwen Zheng and home favourite Coco Gauff.

Against Gauff in the semi-finals, Rybakina lost the opening set 3-6 but steadily took control, winning the next two sets 6-4, 6-4. She also had to withstand a strongly partisan crowd as she maintained her composure during the decisive stages of the contest.

The final will also mark a major change at the top of the WTA Rankings. Rybakina secured the No. 1 position by reaching the semi-finals, meaning Sabalenka's 99-week reign at the summit will come to an end next week.

Their rivalry makes the championship clash even more intriguing. Sabalenka leads their head-to-head record 10-7 and has won their last two encounters, but Rybakina holds the most significant victory between them this season.

At the Australian Open in January, Rybakina rallied from 3-0 down in the deciding set to defeat Sabalenka and claim the title. Saturday's final therefore gives Sabalenka an opportunity to settle the score on one of tennis' biggest stages.

Rybakina's serve could again be a crucial weapon. She has struck 42 aces in the tournament and produced 143 winners, numbers that underline the power she brings to every match.

The stakes could hardly be higher. Sabalenka is bidding to become the first woman since Serena Williams to win three consecutive US Open titles, while Rybakina is looking to capture her second Grand Slam of the year and begin her reign as world No. 1 with another major championship.

With the year's final Grand Slam title, the top ranking and a compelling rivalry all converging in one match, Flushing Meadows is set for a finale worthy of the tournament.
