Ranchi: The reported kidnapping of Saurabh Kumar, son of Chatra MLA Janardan Paswan, triggered a major police alert in Ranchi on Monday but later turned out to be false, with police finding that the young man had gone out with his friends.
Saurabh, a student at Amity University, Ranchi, was traced and recovered by police within about an hour of receiving information about his alleged disappearance. During questioning, police found that he had gone out with his friends and had not been abducted.
The incident had initially created considerable concern in Ranchi and Chatra after information emerged that the MLA’s son had allegedly been taken away from near the university campus. Initial reports said police had launched a search operation and were examining CCTV footage and other evidence to establish what had happened.
According to information provided by MLA Janardan Paswan, several people had allegedly arrived in three to four Scorpio vehicles and assaulted his son before taking him away. The MLA had informed senior police officials and requested an immediate search for his son. His vehicle was reportedly found parked outside the university gate.
Following the information, Ranchi Police immediately began checking the circumstances surrounding the reported incident. Teams were deployed to trace the youth and verify the movements of the vehicles mentioned in the initial complaint. Police also examined available CCTV footage and questioned people connected with the student.
However, the subsequent recovery of Saurabh within a short period changed the nature of the case. Police questioning indicated that he had gone out with friends and that there was no evidence of an actual kidnapping.
The development brought relief to the family and ended the immediate search operation. Police are nevertheless examining how the information about the alleged abduction originated and whether there was any altercation or other incident preceding the report.
The incident had earlier sparked a flurry of activity among Ranchi Police teams, with officials treating the initial information seriously because of the alleged involvement of multiple vehicles and the claim that the student had been forcibly taken away.
Police are now expected to establish the complete sequence of events and verify the statements of the people present at the time. Officials have also indicated that any further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing inquiry.
The episode highlights the importance of verifying information in cases involving alleged abductions, particularly when such reports can quickly trigger widespread public concern and a large-scale police response.
