Jamshedpur: Jamshedpur continued to endure oppressive summer conditions for the past 24- hours or so, with the maximum temperature touching 38.6°C, while the minimum settled at 29.2°C, nearly 4°C above normal, indicating unusually warm nights and mounting discomfort for residents.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Saraikela-Kharswan, cautioning that isolated pockets in the Kolhan region could witness intensified heat conditions over the next 24 hours.
The soaring temperatures, coupled with dry weather, have significantly increased the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses.
“Daytime heat has become unbearable, but what is more difficult is that even nights are offering no relief,” said a resident in Jamshedpur’s Bistupur area adding people are avoiding stepping out unless absolutely necessary.
According to the IMD’s Ranchi weather bulletin, no rainfall was recorded in Jamshedpur in the last 48-hours, while humidity and stagnant air have added to public discomfort.
Across Jharkhand, Daltonganj remained the hottest city at 44.4°C, reflecting the severity of the heatwave spreading across several districts.
However, amid the intense heat, the weather department has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 Kmph at isolated places across the state, including southern districts.
Meteorologists say the changing atmospheric conditions could trigger brief spells of rain or storm activity, offering temporary respite from the heat.
“Thunderstorm development is likely in parts of southern Jharkhand. Residents should remain cautious as strong winds and lightning may occur suddenly,” an IMD official said.
The department has further predicted stronger thunderstorm activity over central and adjoining regions on May 24 and 25, while heatwave conditions are expected to persist in north-western Jharkhand, particularly in Garhwa, Palamu and Chatra, until May 26.
With temperatures expected to remain elevated over the coming days, health experts have advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during afternoon hours, wear light cotton clothing, and take extra care of children, senior citizens and outdoor workers, as Jamshedpur and several other places brace for a prolonged spell of extreme weather.
