NHRC Special Monitor Reviews Human Rights Education at IIIT Ranchi, Suggests Key Reforms

Ranchi: Indian Institute of Information Technology Ranchi hosted Prof. Kanhaiya Tripathi, Special Monitor of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), on April 23, 2026, as part of his official visit to Jharkhand.
The visit aimed to review the status of human rights education and gender equality in higher educational institutions. During his interaction, Prof. Tripathi held detailed discussions with the institute’s Director Prof. Rajeev Srivastava, along with faculty members, ??????????, and students.
The deliberations focused on evaluating existing practices, identifying challenges, and exploring opportunities to strengthen human rights awareness and gender sensitivity within the academic environment. Prof. Tripathi emphasized the need for inclusive and responsive institutional systems to ensure student welfare and equitable learning conditions.
He offered several key recommendations to enhance the institutional framework, including setting up a dedicated Human Rights Cell, strengthening gender sensitization initiatives, and developing a digital platform for student welfare and grievance redressal. He also suggested organising workshops on human rights and gender equality, introducing an open elective course on human rights, and exploring the possibility of launching it as a certificate or degree programme, subject to necessary approvals.
Additionally, he proposed the initiation of an academic journal on human rights to promote research and the formation of a task force on cyber hygiene and security to encourage responsible digital practices among students.
