Viral cruelty case: Jharkhand youth booked for killing wildlife for online views

Ranchi: A disturbing case has surfaced from Jharkhand’s Khunti district, where a young man allegedly hunted and killed wild animals—including protected species—and uploaded the videos online to gain likes and views.

The matter came to light after several such videos went viral on social media. Acting on complaints from animal rights activists, the Forest Department registered a case and launched an investigation.

Officials said an Instagram account had been regularly posting clips showing the accused capturing and killing animals such as the highly venomous Russell's viper, the Indian rock python, and several protected birds. The videos also showed him cooking and consuming the animals.

Following the probe, the accused was identified as Lutar Purti. He was taken into custody and questioned by the Forest Department. Officials noted that many of the animals involved are protected under wildlife laws, making the acts a serious offence.

Family members of the accused have claimed that he is mentally unwell and said he fell seriously ill after consuming snake meat. They appealed for leniency to allow medical treatment and issued an apology on his behalf.

The accused has been released on bond, with his family assuring authorities that he will cooperate with the investigation and appear whenever required.

Animal rights activists have condemned the incident, calling it a deeply troubling example of cruelty being used as entertainment. Authorities said further investigation is underway and strict action will be taken in accordance with the law.
