
Deoghar: The picture of the Municipal General Elections 2026 became clearer on Friday after a press briefing held at the Collectorate auditorium under the chairmanship of the District Election Officer for Municipal Bodies cum Deputy Commissioner. During the interaction, media persons were informed in detail about the election schedule and the status of candidates as notified by the State Election Commission, Jharkhand.
Officials said that Deoghar Municipal Corporation, a Class B body, has a total of 36 wards. For the election, 158 polling stations and 14 auxiliary polling stations have been set up, taking the total number of polling centres to 172. In Madhupur Municipal Council, also a Class-B body, there are 23 wards with 46 polling stations.The District Election Officer informed that allotment of election symbols will take place on February 7. Polling is scheduled to be held on February 23, while counting of votes will be taken up on February 27.
Giving details of the candidates, it was stated that a total of 20 nominations were filed for the post of Mayor in Deoghar Municipal Corporation. After scrutiny, one nomination was rejected and one candidate withdrew, leaving 18 candidates in the fray.
The candidates contesting for the mayoral post are Ashok Kumar Mishra, Uday Kumar Chakravarti, Umashankar Singh, Kundan Kumar Sharma, Gaurav Kumar Singh, Dhirendra Kumar Pandey, Nagendra Nath Baliyase, Nirmal Prakash Deepak, Nilesh Kumar Gupta, Manju Devi, Ravi Kumar Keshari, Ravi Kumar Raut, Rajendra Kumar Yadav, Rita Chaurasia, Sunil Kumar Gupta, Subodh Kumar Rajhansh, Suraj Kumar Jha and Sonam Kumari.
For the post of Chairperson in Madhupur Municipal Council, eight nominations were received. After scrutiny, one nomination was found invalid, while no withdrawals took place. As a result, seven candidates remain in the contest. These include Darkhshan Parveen, Tabbassum Naj, Mitti Kumari, Shabana Parveen, Sanubar Yasmin, Anu Kumari and Lakshmi Kumari.Apart from this, a total of 354 candidates are contesting from ward numbers 1 to 36 in Deoghar Municipal Corporation and ward numbers 1 to 23 in Madhupur Municipal Council.
The press briefing was attended by the Deputy Election Officer, the District Public Relations Officer-cum-In-charge of the Media Cell, the Assistant Public Relations Officer, along with officials and staff from the concerned departments.
