Ranchi: The BJP is all set to appoint a new state President for Jharkhand on January 14, with acting chief Aditya Sahu emerging as the consensus candidate and likely to be elected unopposed.
The election schedule, announced by BJP state election officer and MP Dr Pradeep Verma, states that nominations will be filed on January 13 at the BJP’s Ranchi office between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Scrutiny will conclude by 3 p.m., while candidates can withdraw nominations until 5 p.m. the same day.
If more than one nomination is received, voting will be conducted on January 14. However, party sources said there is overwhelming support for Sahu across organisational levels, reducing the possibility of a contest.
Sahu, who is currently holding the post in an acting capacity, is regarded as a seasoned organiser with wide acceptability among party cadres. The central leadership is understood to favour his elevation as the full-time state chief.
Union Minister Jual Oram, serving as the party’s Jharkhand election officer, is expected to arrive in Ranchi shortly. Consultations with senior leaders, including Babulal Marandi, are expected to finalise the process.
The choice of January 14 is seen as symbolic, coinciding with Makar Sankranti and the conclusion of the Kharmas period, both considered auspicious. The BJP believes the date signals a fresh start for the party’s organisational strengthening in the state.
Alongside the state President’s election, more than 15 representatives from Jharkhand are also likely to be nominated to the BJP’s National Council.
